Installation is mostly quite easy, but the problem is the hardware acceleration you need for most games. XFree86-4/DRI is still in development for FreeBSD (see http://www.teleport.com/~anholt/devel/dri/ for actual status) and you'll also need some extra linux compat stuff to make linux binaries 'see' the DRI. I could play Q3A with Matrox G400 in XF401 and 402, but for games I'm mostly using my Voodoo2 cards (in SLI mode) as they are very easy to setup in XF3 as well as XF4, using the Linux Glide 2 driver. There are some quirks though. Sometimes sound is lagging behind (as for example in the recently released Rune demo), and with the latest -STABLE, sound is gone in Q3A (not in the other games). Workaround is to use OSS. The Loki Demo Launcher is pretty cool and works well in FreeBSD! BTW, some time ago Loki announced that they support playing their games in FreeBSD's Linux mode. I don't know what's up with that, as I don't see any reference anymore on their website. Besides, I think it would be limited to the game itself, not to setting up your hardware which is the most difficult part. Regards, Karel.
