It's always worked for me to create a file /root/.my.cnf containing: [client] user = root password = imnottellingyou Make sure that's mode 400. You should then be able to type 'mysql' as the unix root user and be auto-logged into a root level mysql session without having to type in the password explicitly. Other client applications (mysqldump, mysqladmin, mysqlcheck etc.) will work similarly.
