They are in /dev and in /etc/ttys; the message I get in screen is 'no more ptys'... Hmm, looking more on this, I think I was relying on screen too much. Yes, before those changes, logins failed, but now it just looks like screen isn't using more then the ttyp* range. Logins, at least, don't fail.
