Ok, here's what happened (for future reference):

(Part of this thread is in the emails to Jochim Kuebart)

I had wanted to make sure that the server was going to work at all on my machine, so I set it up with what I thought was the lowest common denominator. This was an SVGA monitor and VGA16 driver. However, after looking at the logs, I realized that what was happening is that the init code thought that all the modes were invalid and "deleted" them (see repaste of log below). Then tried to switch to the lowest resolution (which was not non-existent). Thinking that perhaps the accelerated setup might have more luck, I tried this (XF32_P9000). This works fine. (I also entered the exat parameters for my NEC 3D monitor.)

So, I don't know exactly which part of the server was killing the OS, but by making it use a more complex setup, it seems to work much better. Maybe someone else could try starting the XServer on an accelerated system (or even a P9000) with the same LCD (lowest common denominator) settings and see what happens.

Now I've got other problems... look in the other threads from me to see. :)

I would like to see the X server output. If xdm is set to start
automatically, the output will be in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xdm/xdm-errors.
