It tured out I have /usr/X11R6/bin in my path before /usr/local/bin (can't find why yet, seems it should be other way around), and there is a msgfmt in that directory, installed by xview (a dependency of xmahjongg). This version does not have a -o option, and fails on it. Renaming of /usr/X11/bin/msgfmt to /usr/X11/bin/msgfmt.old solved the problem for me, xmahjongg works fine too :) Now I am not sure who should I inform about this issue.
