In the past I have had problems exactly like this as a result of a SCSI bus that was out of spec. Check your termination on the bus, connections, cable, etc. Also, if you're using any kind of SCSI converter - e.g., to connect an 80-pin drive to a 68-pin cable - it may be causing you trouble, as well. The previous responses offered sound advice - if you can't get any specific hints as to what the problem is, remove devices gradually until you can narrow it down. Good luck!
