I did some poking round and send-pr is supposed to fill the Originator field in automatically (from a range of places, /etc/passwd is the last it tries). I was not in the /etc/passwd file, but I could log in! What seems to have happened is that I ran "mergemaster" without being sufficiently careful, overwrote the password files with the install defaults, but never remade the .db files. So I could log in and ls etc worked (because they use the .db files), but anything that looked at /etc/passwd was broken. /\ / \ ---- Greg, wearing a pointy hat.
