I think te issue is a bit more fundamental. My mixer no longer shows a volume setting! I now am seeing pcm, speaker, line, mic, cd, rec, line1, phin, phout, and video. I see this on several different tools, so I think something basic got hosed! FWIW, xmms still works for me. It does not seem to use the volume control.
