A revised patch is being tested.  The first pass, with no autotools
installed by default, worked fine; a second pass, with some already
installed, failed due to an error in the environment that kris introduced.
It took pav@ looking over my shoulder to diagnose what the problem was
with that.

Unless something goes wrong in the next 48 hours of builds, I expect to
give the go-ahead for this.
