I subsequently moved the hard drive back to the original system, and everything appears to be OK. I'm putting together a small SCSI I/O torture test to confirm this. Anyway, my problem may have been a cable or my own inability to correctly attach a cable to a connector. Thanks to those who took the time to e-mail their suggestions! -- Scott Nichol
