It's bad practice to try to do this for system-wide X preferences.
Rather do it in your own .xinitrc or .xsession as appropriate.  For
example, you might put this in your .xinitrc:

	TERM=xterm-color; export TERM

Obviously, you'd then want to take care to not mess with the value of
TERM in your .profile.
