But clearly nobody's using them with FreeBSD or the XNS code wouldn't
have been the mess that it was.

I think it's important to separate *theoretical* importance from
practical, proven importance.  To use your analogy back, people are
using the IDE driver code that you're forced to load on your system
and not use, but not, to anyone's knowledge, the XNS code.
