You may have to configure the mouse manually. Try configuring w/o the mouse. Then modify /etc/XF86Config, find the 'Pointer' section, and set as appropriate. If you are using moused (you have a mouse cursor in your text sessions), set the mouse to /dev/sysmouse and type to `Mouse Systems'.
