Other than already proposed solution, given that you are the only person sitting near the machine & working power management, a press of the power button should cleanly shut down the computer. At least that is what happens on/with FreeBSD 6.x, with ACPI enabled, on my IBM Thinkpad T42 when I am feeling lazy enough to avoid typing "shutdown -p now". - Parv --
