It's generally not available on FTP sites because it takes up too much
space.  Are you absolutely certain the software in question won't work on
2.2.8 (have you tried it)?  I'm not sure, but I believe it should be
technically possible to install 2.2.8, then use cvs or cvsup to
downgrade your source to 2.2.6, and finally make world.
