Bill Paul, who has written many of the drivers for the Tulip "would-be
workalike" chips (PNIC, Realtek, VIA Rhine, Macronix are ones that come to
mind) posted his assessment of their utility relative to the original. I
can't recall which list, or exactly when, his message was posted, but if
you search the lists (start with questions & hardware) with some of the
above keywords you should turn find it.
