Well, I don't want to go into that flame war (from ntp-hackers) but AFAIK, there's still some things ntpdate does that ntpd -q or -g doesn't. ntpdate on startup is pretty fast whereas "ntpd -q" can take several minutes to complete (recollection of ntp-hackers discussions) and that's pretty unacceptable for many people.
