If you're on a CD subscription, you tend to accumulate a bunch of them, and locating the right one would be easier if the program telling you to go get one of them told you as specifically as possible which one to go get. It also applies to FTP access in that there can be several versions of FreeBSD out there at any one time - all of them referencing the same directories could make life difficult...
