While it is possible to help keep things cooler by putting the processor to sleep in the idle loop (which FreeBSD does on non-SMP systems), that alone is not a solution to a thermal problem. If your system were under heavy load (and if it isn't, WHY do you have an SMP system in the first place?), you would have exactly the same problem no matter which operating system you used, since the processor would not be put to sleep very often. Your only solution is to fix the problem the right way, by providing more cooling.
