you say you used hyperterminal? well if you remember the
baud rate you can edit the file /etc/remote and have aline
like:

serbox:dv=/dev/cuaa0:br#9600:pa=none:

if the speed is not 9600 or serial port is not cuaa0, changeit,
after this type:

tip serbox

this is a serial port communications program.
