Message-ID: MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: TEXT/PLAIN; charset=US-ASCII Sender: owner-freebsd-questions@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk X-Loop: FreeBSD.ORG Hi, I've got two 36G SCSI disks I want to mirror on a new server I'm building with FreeBSD 4.2. This is my first exposure to vinum, though we do have a long installed and working vinum 3.3 machine. The server has a 6G IDE boot disk, 1G RAM, dual 850 Pentiums. 4.2-RELEASE GENERIC kernel running. I read somewhere that there are significant differences in vinum as of 4.0, so I'm not sure if that explains some of the differences I see: 3.3:/dev/vinum total 7 brwx------ 1 root wheel 25, 0x40000001 Feb 1 2000 Control brwx------ 1 root wheel 25, 0x40000002 Feb 1 2000 control brwx------ 1 root wheel 25, 0x40000000 Feb 1 2000 controld drwxr-xr-x 2 root wheel 512 Feb 1 2000 drive drwxr-xr-x 2 root wheel 512 Feb 1 2000 plex drwxr-xr-x 2 root wheel 512 Feb 1 2000 rplex drwxr-xr-x 2 root wheel 512 Feb 1 2000 rsd crwxr-xr-- 1 root wheel 91, 0 Jul 23 02:11 rvinum0 drwxr-xr-x 2 root wheel 512 Feb 1 2000 rvol drwxr-xr-x 2 root wheel 512 Feb 1 2000 sd brwxr-xr-- 1 root wheel 25, 0 Feb 1 2000 vinum0 drwxr-xr-x 3 root wheel 512 Feb 1 2000 vol 4.2:/dev/vinum crw------- 1 root wheel 91, 0x40000001 Dec 13 16:16 Control crw------- 1 root wheel 91, 0x40000002 Dec 13 16:16 control crw------- 1 root wheel 91, 0x40000000 Dec 13 16:16 controld drwxr-xr-x 2 root wheel 512 Dec 13 16:16 drive drwxr-xr-x 2 root wheel 512 Dec 13 16:16 plex drwxr-xr-x 2 root wheel 512 Dec 13 16:16 sd drwxr-xr-x 2 root wheel 512 Dec 13 16:16 vol All I did to get vinum going so far was to set start_vinum="YES" in /etc/rc.conf and reboot. Now, when I do this: su-2.04# vinum Can't open /dev/vinum/Control: Operation not permitted I get that message. /dev/MAKEDEV knows nothing about vinum either. If someone can help me get this going, I would be happy to write a vinum how-to document or something... I didn't find much about vinum under 4.x in the mailing list archives.
