Try -s at the boot prompt.

If you can't get a boot prompt (it may be that old), then you will need
to boot off the emergency boot floppy to fsck /.  If you didn't make one,
you will need to make one (or get someone to make one for you -- I don't
have any systems that old that aren't 1.x, sorry).
