In fact, with a lot of GigE cards, they autodetect the connection type and you can use a straight-through cable. I have that configuration running FreeBSD to Windows XP now, waiting for gig switches to get cheap. (Netgear GS104 looks like the first of the cheaper ones, still needs to drop by 50%.)
