I've resolved my problem in a different way. I was given a P133 and motherboard so I upgraded the 486 that was having the trouble. So far so good. Have you posted your findings to -STABLE or in a PR? Maybe if the developers see that the same machine runs fine on 4.4, they will look into this a little deeper instead of just writing it off as a hardware issue.
