I "solved" this problem in one of two ways. I'm not sure which was the
impacting, but the gnome-terminal problem went away after doing it.

1) Setting LANG in a console login shell before starting KDM.
    => setenv LANG en_US.UTF-8

2) Setting lang in my user .login_conf.
    => me: \
         :lang=en_US.UTF-8:
