You could use tip(1). it's in the base system, so you don't need
to install anything.
If your serial cable is connected to com1, just type

tip com1 

as root. If you want to use it as another user you'll have to
change some permissions. If your serial cable is on another
serial port, just use that portname.

Don't forget to check out the manpage.

If you have support for serial ports in your kernel, and the
standard kernel has that support, then you won't have to do anything else.
