At the time they wrote that everyone was interfacing amanda to the
changer software that came with their individual OS or tape changer
or various freeware offerings.  Since chg-scsi has been out there's
far less reason to try all the choices.  I would suggest you start
with chg-scsi and a more modern version of FreeBSD.  Also, there are
a lot of experienced amanda users on the amanda list at
amanda-users@amanda.org who can help.  Only a couple of whom I've
ever seen around here.
