I'm with you there. I just don't have a recovery CDROM, so I'm keeping the recovery partition as a last resort. I'll have to look into creating a bootable restore CDROM. It'd be really nice to be able to update that recovery partition too... Those service packs took a LONG time to download. I'd love to save the new XP configuration in that recovery partition.
