Dear all, I am a newbie to linux servers and tape backups, and I have a problem = performing a simple 'tar -cf' backup.=20 The system in question: Redhat 9.0 on a Dell PowerEdge 600SC with=20 Adaptec AIC7XXX EISA/VLB/PCI SCSI HBA DRIVER, Rev 6.2.8 The tape drive is a DELL PowerVault 100T DDS4. It appears as 'Python = 06408-XXX Rev: 9100' in /proc/scsi/scsi. It is the only SCSI device on a = Adaptec 3960D Ultra160 SCSI adapter. Using a brand new DDS-4 tape, I try the following: [root@nccserver root]# tar cvf /dev/st0 data/=20 data/ ...=20 tar: /dev/st0: Wrote only 0 of 10240 bytes=20 tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now=20 If I try reading the tape contents: [root@nccserver root]# tar tvf /dev/st0 |more=20 tar: /dev/st0: Cannot read: Input/output error=20 tar: At beginning of tape, quitting now=20 tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now=20 Some info about the tape drive and related hardware: [root@nccserver root]# mt -f /dev/st0 status=20 SCSI 2 tape drive:=20 File number=3D0, block number=3D0, partition=3D0.=20 Tape block size 512 bytes. Are providing information about the nature of the problem, but I don't = know how to interpret them. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.
