I think about it this way: if you have two (or a very small number of) people involved in a conversation from the beginning, top-posting may(!) make sense, because everyone involved is at the same "place", and can be assumed to know where a given response w/o context fits in. As soon as many people are involved and cannot be assumed to be following closely all the time, I personally see it as a sign of decent respect to provide context by doing what's been described several times now. cheers & happy posting.
