One minor clarification on this point - in HEAD and stable/10 both syscons and vt are enabled in GENERIC, and one can be selected at boot time via the kern.vty tunable. Syscons is indeed the default in both branches for now. The changes to allow them to coexist were not merged to stable/9, so there vt(4) is available only as a build-time option.
