all good points, and I think that since the maintainer uses merkaartor 
(hopefully), and knows what the most important or common deployments 
are, maybe we should  engage him in the conversation.

Would you suggest I open a PR? or would it be better for wxs/ and/ or 
eadler to open one and carefully describe what you think the behavior 
would be? (yes, we all love/hate GNATS.. but at least it makes sure the 
maintainer gets involved in the decisions)
