David, during the install process Terminal/screen 1 is used as the
console. So at any point while you are in sysinstall if you hit ALT+F1
you'll see what sysinstall is actually doing (or so) and what the
success/failure messages are.
If you post those we can make more guesses as to what's wgong :-)
