These are eSATA interfaces.  I've replaced the cables and enclosures (and in
one instance, the drive itself).  Still the problem remains.

I'm going to install 10.0-RELEASE tonight on another disk and verify that the
problem disappears.  That's a shame because I was really enjoying the improved
NFS performance on 10.2!
