If testing at all, it should be with -f, not -x. However, the -f flag to rm(1) obviates the need for testing - rm -f would remove the file if it exists, and just exit if it doesn't; thus, no need for redirection. [roam@ringworld:v0 ~]$ rm -f /tmp/no-such-file [roam@ringworld:v0 ~]$ echo $? 0 [roam@ringworld:v0 ~]$ So just a rm -f /tmp/mysql.sock would do. And yes, it would be better placed in the 'start' section, so that the MySQL server can start even if the machine had crashed without the 'stop' script being called.
