This would just make things worse.

This looks like an X configuration problem.  Have you done anything
with the files in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/app-defaults?  If not, then take
a look at your .xinitrc file.  Does it contain a line like this?

  xrdb -load .Xdefaults

If so, look at the file .Xdefaults (or whatever).  It probably
contains a default which causes this to happen.  If you can't figure
it out, send me the file and I'll see what I can do.  Don't copy the
list, though: these files can be long.
