I've never had the tiniest problem with an 82558 NIC. However, I have recently encountered two potential problems with the 82559 cards that are worth mentioning: 1. Some models now include the boot ROM standard. I've had a few of them insist on attempting a network boot, even when configured for local boot. Intel has a utility that disables the ROM, solving the problem. 2. The 82559 cards are in some way more sensitive to interference, and as a result can be unreliable when used with a riser card. I've run into this with backplane systems, which are electrically similar to a riser card configuration. I've never had a single problem in a standard motherboard configuration.
