The SMP code works very well, and you'll be happy you did when the server starts getting busy (especially with DB lookups if you do them). I wouldn't be afriad of 4.0. The FreeBSD development team kicks butt, and they've had quite a while to work the bugs out. Is it bug free? No. For my purposes, 4.0-S appears to be as bug free as 3.4-S.
