The "www" address was the best I could find. Just wanted to forward along that I've been letting commercial software vendors know that their support for native FreeBSD binary distributions of software is appreciated. At the same time, I'd also like to mention our continued success using FreeBSD for some of our more critical functions. It was a difficult battle convincing my superiors to use FreeBSD over a commerical OS like Solaris or a more popular open-source OS like RedHat Linux. That battle still continues, but we have successfully deployed over 7 FreeBSD systems here at ARL, which cover critical functions such as DNS, time, e-mail gateways, NIS slave servers, network monitoring, and some web-based support tools. While the Linux groups have been concentrating on capturing the desktop users with fancy install programs and configuration tools, FreeBSD has concentrated on creating a lean (but complete), fast, secure, and easy-to-administer server OS. I am not anti-Linux by any means, but I do feel that the entire "feel" of FreeBSD maintains the spirit of how the UNIX OS was meant to function and be administered (using text-based configuration files located in obvious places). Thanks for the hard work in keeping FreeBSD what it is. -- Gil Kloepfer - Network Support Applied Research Laboratories : The University of Texas at Austin (512) 835-3771 / gil@arlut.utexas.edu ----- Forwarded message from Gil Kloepfer ----- Date: Tue, 12 Feb 2002 09:06:24 -0600 From: Gil Kloepfer To: customerservice@sophos.com Subject: Comments on your FreeBSD-based product User-Agent: Mutt/1.3.27i Hello- Several months ago our organization purchased your Sophos Anti-Virus package for FreeBSD (License number {deleted}) to use in conjunction with an open-source e-mail scanning package called AMaViS (A Mail Virus Scanner, see http://www.amavis.org/) for the UNIX-based sendmail e-mail transport. I want to make you aware of how useful your product has been to us since we purchased it back in December. We have successfully escaped infection by the MyParty e-mail worm through your prompt release of virus identities. We continue to escape infection from a myriad of other viruses/worms on a daily basis through the implementation of your product. With few exceptions, my department has had overwhelming praise from the groups we support since encorporating Sophos' sweep into our e-mail system. The reason I am writing is to emphasize that while there is a large group of people using Microsoft's Windows products and Linux, there are also organizations like our's that utilize FreeBSD for our main e-mail gateways. One of the key reasons for choosing your product was its support for FreeBSD. Unfortunately we found it difficult to explain to our salesperson here in the U.S. our desire to purchase the FreeBSD-based product. In short, we would like you to know that your continued support for FreeBSD and other UNIX-based operating systems is greatly appreciated. -- Gil Kloepfer - Network Support Applied Research Laboratories : The University of Texas at Austin (512) 835-3771 / gil@arlut.utexas.edu ----- End forwarded message ----- To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-www" in the body of the message
