As I said in my first e-mail, the kernel WAS running, or at least some parts of it, because the screen blanker worked. I'm no unix kernel hacker, but I would guess that at least a timer interrupt handler wasn't corrupted. THe problem was with the mono graphics card. That was what I had in both machines that was common to both.
