You can have a look to the BSD# Project:

There you can see how to have bleeding edge mono-2.10.1 and updated
ports.  I was willing to merge 2.8, but since the 2.10 branch was
released while FreeBSD 7.4 / 8.2 where released, we will probably skip
this version.
