I think that it's been there ever since XFree86 V4 came to FreeBSD. Of course, XFree86 V4 just became the default at 4.6, I guess, but many people have been running it for months to support any newer video cards. That said, it is confusing and upsetting when this hits the first time. And more so when you realize that you must re-install wrapper every time you re-build your X server.
