I've got the source already (it's not hard to get at all), and don't
have any problems with paperwork.  (I used to work in the DA's office.
Need I say more?)  My problem is that I've only cursory experience
with threads, never programmed X, and generally don't have the
programming skills in those areas that would be needed.

That's not to say I can't learn.  It's just to say that I may need to
talk to others.

Why from scratch?  There are a few 1.1 patches floating around... I
actually considered looking over them, looking over the JDK 1.1->1.1.4
diffs, and figuring out what needs new attention.
