Whether this affects RELENG_4 is unknown at this point, but it is in a different file there: src/contrib/gcc/config/alpha/crtbegin.asm I was able to ftp new binaries and libraries from another machine, since programs only segfault at *exit*, in case anybody needs recovery ideas.
