Manually configuring the proxy server or using the 'direct internet connection' setting work as expected. This problem appeared after upgrading from gnome2-2.24, where it used to work correctly. >How-To-Repeat: Go to System->Preferences->Network proxy, check the 'Automatic proxy configuration' checkbox and enter the URL where to retrieve the config file.
