Tried an install of 3.3-19991124-STABLE today, and had some problems. (Not sure if this is specific to my -STABLE or not, but I've never seen anything like this before). Installed selected distributions over NFS to an IDE drive (wd0). The install seemed to go quite well. (And quickly, over a 100Mb/s LAN :-) But, when I went to boot into my new system, my configured kernel came up, recognized wd0, and the rest of my devices including a SCSI drive on da0... And gave me the following error: changing root device to wd1s1a changing root device to wd1a error 6: panic: cannot mount root (2) ... then proceeded to the automatic reboot sequence. I don't even HAVE anything on wd1... So why would the kernel try and start a filesystem there? I tried physically disabling my SCSI adapter and rebooting. Wouldn't you know, my root device was then mounted on wd0s1a, and FreeBSD came up fine. Can anyone hazard a guess as to why adding SCSI drives should affect the numbering of IDE drives? I certainly can't :-) Ryan Thompson <ryan@sasknow.com> 50% Owner, Technical and Accounts Phone: +1 (306) 664-1161 SaskNow Technologies http://www.sasknow.com #106-380 3120 8th St E Saskatoon, SK S7H 0W2 To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-questions" in the body of the message
