Thanks for the response Steve .... I really have no idea what the finer points of difference between VPN & VLAN are, & despite days of poking around the mailing list archives I'm none the wiser. However (rightly or wrongly) the VLAN tutorial at freebsddiary suggests they are essentially the same > VPN and VLAN are, as several folks have pointed out, two different > things. Since you also said IPsec, I'll assume you meant VPN. It might be easier to explain what I'm trying to do. I want to do is use at least one public IP on a machine with ADSL (DHCP) connection to the internet. The rest of the C class belong the public address resides on a server with totally unrelated internet connection. As I understand it the last thing I need is IPSEC because it would be extremely inconvenient to tamper with the kernel on the remote server .... there are usually 20 or 30 people dialled into it for internet access at anytime & they would get VERY stroppy if I rebooted it without plenty of notice. Thats why I've been trying to comprehend the config files for vtund. > > If you're dealing with systems that do not have NAT boxes in front of > them, it's surprisingly straightforward: > The local ADSL connection has DHCP address, so obviously the LAN runs ppp -nat To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-questions" in the body of the message
