Having just installed this port myself, and run into a similar situation, I suspect that there's a missmatch between the version of MySQL you have installed and the version that the port is expecting. I'd try and locate the MySQL libraries (/usr/local/lib?) and see versions of libmysqlclient.?????? you have. If there's something very close, a symlink would be worth trying, as an experiment.
