Good question! I was puzzled myself for a long time. I stumbled upon an answer in the FAQ at www.FreeBSD.org: How to find it: 1) http://www.FreeBSD.org/ 2) At the top of the page is a yellow "menu bar" "Applications Support Documentation Vendors Search Index Home" 3) Click on "Documentation" 4) The "Documentation" page has a link to "Frequently Asked Questions" Follow that link. 5) Look at the FAQ page, there are different categories: 1. Preface 2. Installation etc 12. Miscellaneous Questions 12.1 12.2 Why use (what are) a.out and ELF executable formats? Along the way, there are many other interesting FAQs to read.
