Thank you all for your replies.

I could still log in. I ran view and I saw the correct root user line at the
top, but another root user line as the last entry with a number of 1000
instead of 0. I deleted this line and the whole problem went away.

I'll just stick to using vipw instead of adduser for editing after this.
